Rainbow Village Taichung: A Burst of Color and Culture in Taiwan

Tucked away in Taichung's Nantun District lies one of Taiwan's most colorful and heartwarming attractions: Rainbow Village. This vibrant little neighborhood has transformed from a fading military dependents' village into a living piece of art and a symbol of resilience, thanks to one man's creativity and determination.

The Story Behind the Colors

The origin of Rainbow Village centers around Mr. Huang Yung-Fu, affectionately known as "Rainbow Grandpa." A former soldier, Huang began painting the walls of his village to save it from demolition. What started as a small artistic effort quickly turned into a full-blown art project, with vivid characters, animals, and patterns splashed across every available surface. His work caught public attention and sparked a campaign that ultimately preserved the village as a cultural landmark.

What to See and Do

Rainbow Village is small, but every corner is packed with photo-worthy scenes and uplifting messages. Visitors can stroll through the alleyways, admire the colorful murals, and learn about the history of the village. There’s also a small souvenir shop where visitors can purchase postcards, magnets, and other memorabilia to support its upkeep.

Getting There

  • From Taichung HSR Station: Take a local bus (e.g., routes 26, 70, 617, or 800) and get off at the nearest stop. It’s just a short walk from there.

  • By taxi: It’s a quick and affordable ride from most central Taichung locations.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and harsh sunlight.

  • Be respectful—this is still a residential area.
